Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this
advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I've always loved Pink's music and knew a bit about her
personally because she grew up about an hour away from my hometown. I remember seeing a lot on the news as she was starting out in the music industry and thought this would be an interesting read to get the full story on her life thus far.

This book is a wonderful compilation of Pink's beginnings, struggles, triumphs, accomplishments and everything in-between.
There are beautiful photos throughout the book that correlate
with the timeline being presented in each chapter.  The author has added quotes from Pink taken from various interviews throughout her career.  The book is extremely reader-friendly with a comfortable storyteller approach.

I enjoyed reading about how some of the songs came about and now want to go back and listen to each of her albums and pay closer attention to the lyrics as I listen!

If you're a fan of Pink's music this is a must read!!

Let me start out by saying I was in elementary school (4th grade to be exact) at the height of the General Hospital frenzy and Working Class Dog album. I was not watching the soap, but some older neighbor girls were. And of course the music was all over the radio.  The movie, Hard To Hold was released in theaters in 1984 and I'm pretty sure I saw that a year or so after its release.  Throughout the 80's Rick Springfield had many other hits that if I heard them now I would recognize many of the songs. This was pretty much the extent of my knowledge about Rick Springfield.

The very first thing that shocked (and I mean SHOCKED) me is that Mr. Springfield is only two years younger than my mother!!!  As I write this my my Mom is 75, Spring field 73!!!!
This factoid totally threw me for a loop!  I was very interested in his writings about his early years in Australia, his relationship with his parents, love of writing music, guitars and dogs.  The parts I could've done without were all the intimate partners he had throughout his life.  ( Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive about the rock star lifestyle, but I think Rick's 'adventures' were much more than the norm.)  He's described it as a 'habit' rather than sex addiction.

I was unaware that he had some popularity in the early 70's in the United States and how editor-in-chief of 16 magazine, Gloria Stavers, was set on making Rick a teen idol just like David Cassidy. I also had no idea he dated Linda Blair from the movie Exorcist fame when she was only 15 years old!!
 (Springfield was 25.)

Rick will be married to his wife Barbara Porter, for 39 years on October 27, 2023.  This woman is a saint in my eyes. She endured Rick's infidelity for many, many, many years and it is beyond a miracle that the two of them are still together.
Happy for them that they are, but a lot of turmoil in this marriage to say the least.  And he wrote the song "Don't Talk To Strangers" while he and Barbara were dating because HE was worried SHE was going to get involved with other people while they were apart!  He has said, "Back then, I was scared that she was f**king around because I was doing the same thing."  HA!!

The last thing I will leave you with in this book review is that Rick tried to commit suicide when he was 17 years old and has struggled with depression since puberty.  He references his depression as "Mr. D" throughout the book; I never in a million years would've thought that he struggled with depression.
The insight to all he has dealt with throughout his life with depression is very sad, but extremely real.

I commend Rick Springfield for laying out the nooks and crannies of his life in this book.  Although the writing style at the beginning of the book was a little choppy, he finds his voice throughout the book (with some flash forwards & flashbacks at spots) and he truly is an excellent writer.  Don't underestimate this guy, he is talented and I believe he has a great heart.

When the Jonas Brothers became a sensation back in 2007
my daughters were ages 5 and 1.  We weren't
watching Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, High School Musical or Camp Rock.
Disney Junior was the channel of choice in our house, so it wasn't until my oldest daughter was around 8 years old when I really knew who the Jonas Brothers were.  Eventually we watched Camp Rock and all the other 'tween' movies.  I remember my husband commenting that the brothers all played instruments and he was very impressed with that since we're in an age where most of the teen boy bands don't play any instruments and get by on their good looks and sometimes little talent.
The youngest Jonas Brother, Nick, is now 22 years old and has shed the squeaky clean Disney image and is doing very well on the Billboard charts.  I've shared Nick's recent videos below, some interviews and a few Jonas Brothers videos.
As Wendy Williams states in her interview with him below, he
may very well be the next Justin Timberlake.
Keep an eye on him!

The very 1st American Idol winner and one of my favorites, Kelly Clarkson!
Here's a compilation of her performances on the 1st season of American Idol:

When I first heard 'HeartBeat Song' on the radio I didn;t know who was singing the song.  There's a part of the song where she sounded exactly like Belinda Carlisle from the Gog-Go's to me and when I found out it was Kelly Clarkson I was thrilled!

Another one of my favorites by Kelly and a GREAT motivational song!

And of course this one is fun to sing along to!

Another fun one!

And here's a 'bathroom' rendition of 'Since You've Been Gone' with Elle DeGeneres

I just watched the final episode of the television show:
(Read about the show here if you're unfamiliar with the show.)

I must admit that I actually thought last season was the end,
but was pleasantly surprised to learn that there would be a sixth and final season.  My husband hasn't been a follower of the show, (although he's seen plenty of episodes) and this last season his comment was, "Wow, this show has really jumped the shark!"
Yes, I must agree that much of the storylines have been far-fetched.
It's been difficult to see many of these characters change, move on and the Glee Club change faces so often since the originals graduated and moved on.

But by far, the hardest hit to this show was the death of Cory Monteith who played McKinley High School quarterback, Finn Hudson.  Cory and Lea Michele (who played Rachel Berry) were dating in real life since 2011 and were still a couple at the time of his death on July 13, 2013.  The show lost a very important player in my opinion and I'm not sure it ever fully bounced back after this.

    Here is that first performance
that had so many hooked on Glee:

This is the song Lea wrote about losing Cory
with a video montage put together by a fan:

If you haven't watched the final two hour episode yet,
I'm not going to post any spoilers,  just like I try not to post spoilers when I do book reviews.

What I will say is that the first hour of this final episode is devoted to the original Glee members and all the loyal fans who stuck by these characters the past six years.  This final episode will remind you why you fell in love with the show, the characters, the talented actors, writers and musicians who brought this show alive.

The second half of the final episode will give you some closure on the main characters and what they move on to do in their lives within the next five years.

If you DO want spoilers on what this last episode entailed,
please check out this Time.com article. Also check out this interview with Jenna Ushkowitz, who played Tina Cohen-Chang and what it was like taping the final episode.

Lastly, although this is goodbye for now,
I know I will be seeing this show all over again because
my twelve year old (whom was only five years old on May 19th, 2009 when the series first premiered!!!!) will absolutely LOVE it!  I haven't allowed her to watch Glee because of the adult content, but she loves to sing, is in her school chorus and will get the show's humor in a few more years.

I hope Glee will live on through re-runs and that upcoming generations take an interest in the show because between the quirkiness and stinging jokes,
there were some great and honest messages.

    Farewell Glee.....
    Don't Stop Believin'

    #GleeGoodBye

Every time I hear this group on the radio I always say to my daughter Em, 'I really like this group!"
To me they are a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other
     'so-called-artists' of today's music scene.
The band Echosmith is comprised of siblings Sydney, Noah, Graham and Jamie.
Their newest release is Bright off of their debut album, Talking Dreams .
Their genre of music is considered American rock and indie-pop.
    YouTube Video for Bright.

You may also recognize them from their 2013 hit single
     Cool Kids.

YouTube video for Colbie Caillat's Try.

Three months ago my daughter Em went to a program with her Girl Scout Cadette troop entitled 'Who's That Girl? ME & MEdia'. The program was run by a local college sorority. They showed the girls magazines and how photographs are manipulated by using Photoshop and they also used the Dove Self Esteem Project on their website. Below are a few of the videos they watched and talked about from the Dove's YouTube site.  I've shared Cobie Caillat's 'Try' video today because it explores this topic extremely well.  I was surprised they didn't share Colbie's video at this program, but when my daughter started to tell me about what they talked about there I showed it to her and she loved it!  I hope you enjoy it as well!

Madison Tevlin 'All Of Me' cover YouTube Video.

A Facebook friend shared this video on her timeline and I just knew I had to share this for Musical Monday.  It had me in tears because I grew up across the street from a girl that had Downs Syndrome and it brought back memories.  She was a few years older than me, but was child-like and less mature, so we were a good fit for one another.  I remember friends in my neighborhood not understanding 'why' my Mom would let me go play with her.  There was only one other girl in our neighborhood that was allowed to go over to her house to play.  My friend was difficult to understand, but we both enjoyed one another's company.  I remember one time she locked me in a closet, walked into another room and was laughing about it.  Her Mom realized I wasn't with her and got me out, but she pretended she didn't do it.  She thought this was the funniest thing.  At the time, I did not.  I was probably only in there for a minute or two.
She went to a special school (this was back in the 70's/80's) and I remember for Christmas the year I was in 5th grade, her parents had Santa come to her house on Christmas Eve in a sleigh.  I remember looking out my bedroom window feeling this was the most magical thing I had ever seen and needless to say, I believed in Santa a year or two more because of that.

Madison Tevlin, you are an inspiration.  I love that you're doing what you want to do regardless of your obstacles.  My 12 year old daughter Em loves to sing to her favorite songs and I can't imagine if she physically wouldn't be able to.  Continue following your dreams and thank you for sharing your voice with us!

Taylor Swift. My 12 year old daughter Em has loved her for most of her time on this earth. She shares the same birthday as Taylor (December 13th) and also loves to sing.
Although Em has not followed in her footsteps with playing guitar (Em plays the violin) she continues to be a huge fan. Em isn't allowed on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, but I am sure to share anything Taylor-related with her when I see it. The first video below is what Taylor did for some of her fans this Christmas. I've also included her Blank Space video along with two performances from New Year's Rockin Eve: Shake It Off and Welcome To New York. Of course Em's ultimate dream is to attend a Taylor Swift concert, but until then listening to her music and watching her videos will have to do.

I heard this song last year (2013) for the first time.
On December 4, 2014 while I was driving Em to her orchestra practice in the morning this song came on The Word FM (Christian radio station) and I remember how much I LOVE this song! Then it hit me who this guy's voice reminds me of...... Freddie Mercury of Queen. The first video is of the live version and the second video is the recorded version with a video. Unfortunately this is only played on Christian radio stations, but I think it should be played on the major ones as well! I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful songs! Feel free to leave me comments, especially if it's your 1st time hearing it!

I was trying to think of what video to post for Memorial Day
on this Musical Monday.  The first video that came to mind was of Whitney Houston singing the national anthem.
"Among the annals of national anthems as a prelude to sporting events, few have topped the one delivered by Whitney Houston before Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa. Just a woman, her incredible voice and the bare minimum of extraneous notes. Her rendition came at a particularly patriotic time, just after the onset of the Persian Gulf War, and was released as a single. It was re-released after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Houston donated all proceeds to charity. She ranks among the best of all-time because of the circumstances and ... that voice.." ~ quote via YouTuber CavBuffalo Soldier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_lCmBvYMRs)

    Hello Everybody!
    to another Musical Monday!
You may have noticed my blog posts have been
few and far between here of late.
The reason for that is all of my kids EOY (End-Of-Year)
activities, as well as a lot of house keeping responsibilities.

I thought this song was extremely fitting for today.
Enjoy this trip back to 1986!

You may remember Mandisa from Season 5 of American Idol.
    And you may not.
    Here is her audition:

    American Idol 5 - Mandisa's Audition

She finished in 9th place on the show, but as you will see in the music video below, NOT winning American Idol didn't hold her back!
She is the 5th American Idol alumnus to win a Grammy Award.
    Her album, Overcomer, won the
Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014!

I love this song and this video for so many reasons.
I only wish more 'Pop' radio stations played this song because it is so inspirational.  I first heard the song online, through a post on Facebook.
The only radio station I hear playing this is a Christian station in our area called Word FM.  If you've never heard the song or saw the video, please give it a try!
    Enjoy!
