All Stories
Here we are at the end of April 2014 already!
So far it hasn't seemed much like Spring here in Pennsylvania.
We've had a few sunny and warm days scattered throughout the month,
but mostly the weather has been windy, cool, damp and rainy
seeming like Fall weather at times. I'm ready to start planting a garden and working in my flower beds, but Mother Nature just won't give us a break!
Kaye and I braved the cool & cloudy weather this past Saturday
to go to a local festival. There were all sorts of crafts, face painting stations, demonstrations, performances by local elementary bands, choral groups and dance studios. We left the house at 10:40am and didn't get home until 2:15pm.
Luckily everyone received a ticket for a free hot dog and water and there was also free popcorn and cotton candy (which Kaye went back for 2 more bags of the cotton candy because they were small.) I was beat for the rest of Saturday.

Sunday the girls went to Sunday School and I went to a parenting class that had been on hiatus for the Lenten season. Each session is based on the book 'The Love Dare For Parents' by Stephen Kendrick. If you've seen the movie 'Fireproof' with Kirk Cameron, you already know a bit about the first book called 'The Love Dare' by Alex Kendrick . We talk about different things from the book in the class and I like learning from parents that are going through issues with their teens, as well as the seasoned parents who have children my age. It's refreshing to get a different perspective on things. When this parenting class ends I will be borrowing the book from my church, reading and reviewing it.
I have the first book, 'The Love Dare',
which I will also be reading and reviewing at some point.
So after Sunday School we had to come home because the girls were invited to our neighbor boys birthdya party from Noon to 3pm. So I decided that since I didn't get anything done around the house on Saturday, that I had to make some progress with cleaning because I wouldn't be home much this coming week.
Normally I don't do laundry or cleaning on a Sunday, but Tuesday through Thursday I volunteered to chaperone Em's band rehearsals. Qualifying 5th graders from 16 elementary schools in our district will be bused from their elementary schools to a local middle school to practice for the All City Band Concert to be held at 7:30pm this Thursday evening. I will be on the bus by 9:15am and not get home until noonish each of those days. So knowing that I have a pretty full schedule ahead this week, I decided to catch up/get ahead with housework on Sunday. Four loads of laundry, cleaned the bathrooms, straightened Kaye's room up, put away clothes, put all the activities and appointments that are upcoming for May on my calendar, vacuumed, dusted and then by dinnertime I was
beat on my feet!
Monday I had to make a trip to the pharmacy to get allergy medication and then on to Wal Mart to check for some odds & ends. I wanted to get on the elliptical to jumpstart getting back into the habit of working out, but I was just so tired that I could not motivate myself to move. Not to mention the headache I had.
After school Em and I had our allergy shot appointment and then onto the public library to return and borrow more books.
So here we are at Tuesday.

Yesterday I went to a used book sale that supports local womens scholarships.
All the books are donated and collected at the beginning of April.
I've been going to this sale for about 9 years now.
This was the first year that the prices were drastically increased.
In past years I paid .25 to .50 for a paperback book.
This year all paperbacks were $1.
In past years childrens floppy books were anywhere from
ten, twenty-five and fifty cents.
This year they were fifty cents to one dollar.
The selection was less interesting to mine and my childrens tastes.
Yesterday was 'Preview Day'.
This is the day that most of the local used booksellers come to get first dibs on what is available. They really combed through the selections this year!
- Preview Day Thursday, April 24, 2-6 pm
- $20 entry fee 2-3 pm
- $15 entry fee 3-6 pm
- Free Entry and Sale Times:
- Friday (April 25) & Saturday (April 26), 10 am to 8 pm
- Sunday (April 27), 12 noon to 8 pm - Half Price Day
- Monday (April 28), 10 am to 1 pm - Bag Day $5/standard grocery bag
Below are the books that I purchased for myself.
I spent a total of $27, which isn't bad and the money is going to a good cause.
I got Kaye some Barbie books, a few books for her teacher and Em some Full House chapter books. If she doesn't find them interesting I will save them for when Kaye is old enough to read them.
I've become more of an e-book girl over the past four years.
I feel like I can read faster on an e-reader because I can enlarge the font.
It's also nice to not have to physically store the books.
The reason I go to this books sale is more for the childrens books.
Both my daughters would rather hold a physical book than read it on their tablet.
Also, they need a physical book to take to school with them to read for when they've finished their work.

I always get excited when this sale comes around,
but this year my excitement was deflated by the prices and selection.
My thought was that book prices would drop at used books sales because of the use of e-readers, but I guess the exact opposite is happening.
I haven't been to my local library's used book sale in years,
but I think I will check it out next month. It will be interesting to see if their prices are comparable to the sale I attended yesterday.

American Blogger is a documentary about a man, Christopher Wiegand, who travels the country to interview bloggers.

I am not being paid for this post and I have never heard of either Chris or his wife's blog until I stumbled upon his documentary online a few days ago.
I'm interested in this documentary for the following reasons:
- I still consider myself a newbie blogger and like learning from seasoned bloggers. There will be 51 bloggers in this film (took that number from Christopher's blog where it says 'Meet The Bloggers')
- I love travel. I have an Associates degree in Travel & Tourism, but haven't been on a plane since my honeymoon in 1998. I miss travel, but with limited funds and having a dog with separation anxiety for the past 14 years, we haven't gone anywhere. I'm interested in follwing him around in this film.
- Photography. I love photos and taking pictures. As this guy says on his blog, "I use my camera to tell stories." You had me at the word camera Mr. Wiegand.
I went to Christopher Wiegand's Facebook page and saw a post
posted April 11, 2104 entitled
"The Wiegands: My Response to the American Blogger Controversy."
I was baffled by this to say the least.
How could there be controversy over an independent documentary showcasing bloggers from around America?
Below are some excerpts from Christopher's wife's blog post:
"The way these women tell their stories authentically does represent American Bloggers, but we are completely aware that not all categories of American Bloggers are represented in this film. Nor was that the goal for this first film. You can read this post from almost a year ago. Read the idea, the thought behind it. See where I mention American Blogger Part 2? From the beginning this was the start of a much bigger conversation. So many stories to be told. He also bought the domain (www.americanblogger.com) with the idea that it could eventually be more than a film but also a website. Featuring American Bloggers everyday. These are all ideas and dreams that he had but needed to start somewhere and build momentum to take this bigger places."
" I am an American Blogger. You are an American Blogger. We are American Bloggers. I have many wonderful international followers and at the beginning Chris thought this would be an amazing series & website. And our tiny circle was a good way to start the conversation. My take on this controversy is that maybe bloggers that thought they would be featured in the film weren't chosen and they are bitter. Just my thoughts from reading the above article. I find it sad that Casey has had a wonderfully fulfilling experience through blogging for many years and now that her husband is delving into blogging through film making, he is receiving backlash.
I ventured down to the comments section on the site that I found the trailer for American Blogger and saw some really hateful and distasteful words. I debated about listing them here, but I will so anyone reading this can see the opposing viewpoint.
There was an update to Casey's blog a few days ago announcing that American Blogger would be released sooner than expected! They are still planning on an early June release through iTunes, but they are releasing the film Wednesday, April 23, 2014! (Yesterday!) You can read more about the early release here.
Yesterday Casey's blog post announced the release of the film and expressed how proud she was of her husband and all the women bloggers featured in the film. You can read that post here.
The goal of this film was to create a love story to the blogging community. I wanted to show how these women use their voice, share their stories and connect with one another. I wanted to create a moving visual for so many of the women that have built communities around their blogs.... equal parts "reality footage" and interviews. Even within this one film there are 51 women portrayed, and unfortunately, I didn't have time to tell each of their stories. It is my hope that by introducing them to you, you will take the time to read their stories and see who they are and what they have been through. Look at this film as an introduction; as the first piece to a larger puzzle.

Earth Day 2014.
Did you know that the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970?
Why April 22nd? Well, according to Wikipedia
"U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson chose the date in order to maximize participation on college campuses for what he conceived as an 'environmental teach-in'. He determined the week of April 19-25 was the best bet because it did not fall during exams or spring break."

The Earth Day Network 
Above you've seen a lot of subjects that are taught about environmentalism.
Recently a friend of mine told me about something old (that is new again!) is popping up around the country. They are called Creative Reuse Centers.
Here is a .pdf that will explain a little more in depth what these centers provide.
In a nutshell these centers provide educators with materials that can be re-used for creative purposes.

I created an online Facebook Group some time ago designed for parents, grandparents, Pre-K and daycare providers to network, discover and share arts and craft ideas for Pre-K through High School aged children. I call it CraftWithKids NetWork. Our Facebook Page is located here.

Earth Day 2014.
Did you know that the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970?
Why April 22nd? Well, according to Wikipedia
"U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson chose the date in order to maximize participation on college campuses for what he conceived as an 'environmental teach-in'. He determined the week of April 19-25 was the best bet because it did not fall during exams or spring break."

The theme for Earth Day 2014 is Green Cities.

The Earth Day Network Above you've seen a lot of subjects that are taught about environmentalism.
Recently a friend of mine told me about something old (that is new again!) is popping up around the country. They are called Creative Reuse Centers.
Here is a .pdf that will explain a little more in depth what these centers provide.
In a nutshell these centers provide educators with materials that can be re-used for creative purposes.
