Happy, Happy, HappyHappy, Happy, Happy by Phil Robertson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I read Willie Robertson's book a week prior to reading this one. I must admit I enjoyed Willie's book more, however that could be because we're around the same age.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Phil's early life. It was almost like reading about Little House On The Prairie because his family lived like they were in the 1800's!

The part that lost my interest was when he was describing different ducks and calls. I just wasn't too interested in that, but I did read it all.

I was also pleasantly surprised at how religious this family is. It was refreshing to read because they truly are everyday people, they've just gone through a lot of extraordinary circumstances.

One thing that shines through both Phil and Willie's books are that they are intelligent. These southern guys worked their way to where they are now and deserve the recognition and fame they are experiencing. I just hope the fame doesn't go to their heads too much and land them in trouble someday.

As some of you may know, a few months ago I began working from home.
There's a little 'blurb' about how this work-at-home opportunity happened here.
There's been more afternoon training sessions at my boss's home than time spent at my home working, but that is okay for now.  The past few weeks I've handled a number of calls from my work station in the basement, which is a start.  Most if these were outgoing calls that I needed to make to inform customers and suppliers of certain details.  One thing this slow start with working from home has showed me is that I need to try to develop a routine.  This may be difficult as the company is a kitchen remodeling business and sometimes things do not go as planned.

For example, this morning our contractor traveled to the cabinet warehouse which is about an hour and a half away, and when he arrived at the customer's home he did not have the security code to get in the home.  Yesterday when I spoke with the contractor he said our boss has the code and he will call him for it tomorrow.  Well, when our contractor called our boss he was out and about with business appointments and such and did not have the code.  Our contractor called me and I did not have the code so I needed to call the customer.  As luck would have it, my internet connection (which was fine 20 minutes earlier) was down!  Luckily I had an order form for the customer with their cellphone number on it.  Unfortunately, I the customer did not answer, so I left a voice mail.  All this time our contractor is waiting for me to get the code so he can get into the house and begin installing the cabinets! I call him back about 10 minutes later to tell him that I could not get a hold of the customer and I left a voice mail.  As I am on the phone with him, he gets a call from our boss, so we hang up.  I wait a few minutes, call our contractor back and find out if he got the code.  He says yes, gives me the code so I have it if anyone needs it (which I should have had from the beginning;  this is a live and learn situation.)  Somehow my boss got through to the customer while I was on the phone with our contractor.  Aye, aye, aye.

This afternoon, while I am eating my lunch and browsing my news feed on Facebook (as I normally do most days) I notice a link to a post entitled:

5 Pitfalls of Working From Home (and How to Avoid Them)

by Jamie from

The Wonder Years: Musings & Misadventures of Motherhood

The first pitfall, ineffective income management, does not really pertain to me.....yet.
We've been managing our family solely on my husband's income for almost 11 years now.
I see my income (as meager as it has been thus far) as a help in paying down debt or purchasing items such as clothes for the kids.  For now, it is just a small extra bit of money.

The second pitfall she mentions is lack of a set work schedule
Now this I can totally relate to!  There have been days where urgent mattes have come up and it is almost the end of the work day.  I've just returned home from picking my daughters up from school and need to handle something at that moment.  It is pretty difficult.  I try to get my daughters settled and explain to them that I have something very important to take care of and that I will help them and listen to them when I am finished.  Sometime being finished doesn't happen for another hour and a half though.  Most of the time Jay has come home within 30 minutes of when I start to handle said urgent matter, but you know how kids always come to Mom even when Dad is there.  They need to get in the habit of respecting my work time and going to Dad for whatever they need when I am occupied with work matters.

Pitfall number three is Blogger's Butt.
Honestly, I have never heard this term before.  In my past working career I've always worked in an office cubicle setting and this was referred to as the secretary's spread.  The urban dictionary online defines it as  the word spread refers to the widening of the hips and ass.   This usually happens to secretaries, who sit in a chair all day snacking on sweets; thus the name, secretary spread.

I have been fighting this for many years and need to get into a workout routine and fast!
The difficult part for me is motivation, time and panning!  I hope to do it very soon though!

Pitfall #4 she states is little personal connection.
I've suffered from this just as a SAHM, especially during this afternoon Kindergarten year!
I barely have time to get out and run errands because I have to be back home to prepare lunch for Kaye before she has to be at Kindy for 12:45pm.  Then I have to make sure to pick up both kids at 3:20pm.  Next year things will be a lot different.  My boss has mentioned getting together at Panera Bread for meetings with the contractors who will be scheduled for jobs so we can talk about the ordering of materials and such.  I'm hoping this bit of personal connection will be enough for me, as my title is Customer Service Manager and I will be talking on the phone to suppliers, customers, contractors and my boss on a regualr basis.  Yes, it may not be face-to-face, but it will be more interaction than I've had as a SAHM over the past few years (minus social media interactions that is.)

The last pitfall Jamie mentions is your family feeling left out.
I've experienced his already with both of my daughters.  As stated above, they would come downstairs to my work station (which is in the basement) while I'm trying to handle said urgent matter and I kind of shoo them away because I'm on the phone.  With Kaye she got a pouty, sad  look an walked away.
It is going to be a learning curve for both of my daughters and probably my husband as well in that I'm not always going to be available for them as I once was.

Currently I am quite worried how this will all work out this summer with my daughters being home from school.  I'm hoping my Mom will help me out on days that get a little hairy for me.  There's a possibility a neighbor who works from home as a real estate agent will swap kids on days that we both need it.  And one more option I have is a mothers helper.  I hope this doesn't turn out to be more challenging than I am anticipating it to be.  Time will tell.

I'd like to say
to Jamie for sharing this blog post and making me think a bit more about my new position as a WAHM!
I'm hoping as time goes by I can establish a better routine and feel better about my new position!

How We Recall by Roger J. Robicheau (Sp 5, US Army)
 The Poetic Plumber
How we recall that day we swore
To serve our country to the core
That clothing issued brought a view
Of raw recruits, this showed so true
Remembered hair was cut away
This look for quite awhile would stay
Our trek before too long did show
New GI’s marching, row by row
And then one day emerged a form
Each proud trained troop in uniform
We followed orders as we should
To do our best, in pride we would
Some served in peace, some went to war
Brave heroes passed through Heaven’s door
We cherished friends who served with us
Great buddies all, how we’d discuss
So many thoughts will never wane
For what we shared, let closeness reign
Our bond was tight, the best to see
For when we served, this had to be
The purpose was to keep you free
God Bless the brave, deservedly

The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a DynastyThe Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a Dynasty by Willie Robertson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was written by Willie and Korie Robertson of A&E's Duck Dynasty fame. It was nice to learn about how the family got their start in their business and how they worked hard for everything they have. It is also very refreshing to read a book about a Christian family who doesn't fit the everyday mold of what you would expect. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the show, as it truly gives you a great background to who this family is and what they believe in.

Sorry it has been awhile since I've posted.  Life is getting in the way again, I suppose.
The weeks in May seem to have gone by more quickly than any other month this year!

A few weeks ago I went to the Franklin Institute with Em's Girl Scout troop.
I hadn't been there since I was in 5th grade.  There were many new areas, including an IMAX
theatre where we saw a movie called 'Space Junk'.  It was about all the garbage we've sent up to space and how we need to find a solution to clean it up.  We toured all the different areas of the museum, but I think everyone's favorite area was where the human heart is located.
I remember walking through the heart when I went on my field trip in elementary school, but it seemed so big back then.  As an adult it just seemed so small to me.

Here's a photo of Em standing by the heart.

I thought this  skeleton on the elliptical was quite funny.

Here's a video of him/her....

Here's a photo of the  Benjamin Franklin statue.

They also had this computer program where you could choose what you would look like if you
a) Smoked   b) had Sun Damage  c) were Obese

Here is one of Em's friends.
The photo on the right is with sun damage, the left photo is without at age 70.

Here is Em at age 70.  Right is sun damaged skin, left is regular aging.
The odd thing is that I can actually see the resemblance to my
maternal grandmother and my Mom in her face.

No, I did not try this myself because there was a lot of people in line for it
and I was too scared to see what I will look like!

In a couple more weeks I'll be chaperoning an overnight trip to the
Philadelphia Zoo with Em's troop.  We get to tour the zoo at night and in the morning,
sleepover in a building called the 'tree house' and have admission to the zoo the next day.
Should be tiring

Looking ahead Kaye has her Daisy ceremony this coming week and Em is going on her
2nd field trip for 4th grade.  My daughters had friends over this past weekend (2 friends of Em's and
1 of Kaye's) and then on Sunday we went to my in laws to celebrate my father in law's 84th birthday.

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend and I am hoping to get some work done in our backyard.
Our swimming pool needs to be uncovered, our patio blocks need to be power washed, and my husband constructed a weather proof audio visual stand so we can watch TV out on the patio (it's kind of hokey, but it will work) but he needs to finish the door on it.  Em is going to her BFF's house for a sleepover tomorrow night and then her friend may be coming over here Saturday to sleep over.   Kaye is having a friend over Saturday afternoon for a bit, so although work needs to be completed around our home, the kids need some down time with friends this weekend too.

As for my work at home job, it has been a slow start with the training due to some difficulties with  subcontractors we had working for the company.  We are moving forward from that mess and hopefully I will get more on-the-job training so I know more about what is expected of me in this position.  It has been  tiny baby steps thus far and I'm hoping to figure out how I'm going to handle it all with the kids being out of school for the summer soon.  Time shall tell!

Whether you're a Mom with babies who have two legs or four, I hope you are enjoying your day!

My day began with getting ready to attend our church's Sunday School breakfast.  Pancakes, sausage, strawberries, and tea enjoyed with my daughters and their Sunday School teachers.  This is the annual tradition on ending the Sunday School year and to give our thanks and appreciation to those who volunteer to teach the children.  Kaye was chosen along with another little girl to hand out the flowers to the teachers as a gift of thanks.  After breakfast my daughters and I attended church together (Jay had worked all day yesterday and went food shopping while we were in church.)

After church we came home for lunch and then went over to my parents to spend some time with my Mom.  I never, ever, ever know what to get her as a gift.  She has no hobbies, doesn't read and is picky about scents.  So I bought her a pink geranium, 2 balloons that Em & Kaye gave her and a card with $25 dollars in it.  My Mom had made a marble cake with chocolate icing, so we had that as a dessert along with some cheese popcorn she put out.  My youngest sister had visited the day before because she was attending a friends daughter's 1st birthday party.  My other sister was probably celebrating with her husband because it is his birthday today.  So I felt good that at least one of my Mom's three daughters was able to visit with her today.  We stayed for about an hour and half, as my allergies had started to act up and I was feeling a bit tired.

My husband had seen his mother at the beginning of this week, as they attended a neighbors funeral together.  He mailed her a card with a check and is calling to talk with her this evening.

My gifts from my kids were home made cards and Jay gave me $50 in his card.
Sometimes I wish my husband was a bit more creative when it comes to gift giving.
Two years ago he bought me a Kindle for Mothers Day and that was probably the best gift he's ever bought me for Mother's Day.  (This past Christmas he bought me the Kindle Fire HD which totally shocked me!)

What I am trying to remember on this day that honors mothers,
is that however people show their love and appreciation for you,
what matters is that you have crossed their minds and everyone shows their feelings for you in their own way.

In Kaye's case, that meant pinching me as hard as she could on my right arm because I told her  no, she could not play on her sister's laptop.  What followed was her being sent to her room to think about what she did.  Jay relieved her from her room after abut 15 minutes and spoke to her about what she did.  She then went outside to play awhile.  After she came back in we talked a bit about what she did and then I let her play on my Kindle Fire HD in her bedroom because she said she wasn't feeling well.  About 15 minutes later I went in to find the Kindle laying on her bed and she was asleep!  Napping is not something Kaye usually does, so she must be really tired from this weekend's events or she is getting ill.
I hope it is the former.

I hope you've enjoyed your day and you at least take a
little time out for yourself today or this evening.
Reflect on the adventures your children have brought to
your life and how without them life would not be the same.

Cleaning House: A Mom's Twelve-Month Experiment to Rid Her Home of Youth EntitlementCleaning House: A Mom's Twelve-Month Experiment to Rid Her Home of Youth Entitlement by Kay Wills Wyma
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It took me some time to read this because I originally borrowed this book from the public library and then didn't get a chance to read it. Every time I went back to borrow t again it was either reserved or checked out! Glad I came back to reading it because it is filled with humor and many truths about today's youth feeling entitled.

The 'Experiment' focuses on one life learning area per month, making this a year long endeavor. At first I thought this may be 'b-o-r-i-n-g' to read about, but Mrs. Wyma writes with humor and I could totally relate to her children's attitudes.

The focus areas include the following life lessons: Beds and Clutter, Cooking (menu planning, shopping & washing dishes), The Outdoors (weeding, planting), Working/Employment, Domestic Dirty Jobs (think bathrooms), Laundry, Handyman/DIY, Party Planning/Hospitality, Teamwork, Errands, Service For Others, and Manners.

By looking at that list of twelve areas you may think 'that's all common sense'. I kind of thought that too, but then thought about some of the things my kids do or say. If your children don't have to do certain tasks, what makes you think that they're intently watching you do said task so they know how to do it? Chances are they're not watching you intently and they don't know how to do said task. You will see that clearly when you read this book, as well as paying more attention to the little things in your child's own daily life.

I have tried little experiments with my kids throughout this book (lunch packing, loading/unloading the dishwasher, cleaning up after a meal, etc.) I can tell you this, my kids need to learn to do more for themselves and this book was a great jump start for me to teach more daily life lessons.

I did not know that Mrs. Wyma started a blog before she got this book deal. I will be going back to look at past entries from her blog, as well as keeping up with her present entries. You can find her at www.theMOATblog.com. Keep teaching your children; they are our future!

Book Review: Cleaning House by Kay Wills Wyma
