Yesterday I posted a 'Wordless Wednesday' photo.  It was a photo of my Spring shoes.  Not exciting, but it was part of what I was doing yesterday.  The day started out by cleaning the bathrooms.  Then the cable guys came to upgrade our internet speed.  By the afternoon I decided I needed to take the heavy sweaters and turtlenecks out of my closet and replace them with short sleeves.  So naturally I also exchanged warm boots for sandals and flip flops.
The weather here in North Eastern Pennsylvania has been so awesome!  It's been in the upper 70's in March!  That almost never happens here, let alone on a consistent basis!  So we've been enjoying it.  Next week the temps are supposed to fall back to where they normally should be, the low 60's.  That's okay though.  I have a lot more organizing and indoor spring cleaning to keep me busy for quite some time.  Winter is over and I am looking forward to more sunshine and being outdoors, but when the weather is cool, I will take advantage and try to get the indoor stuff tackled so I can enjoy more of the outdoors.

Today's agenda includes taking Kaye to speech for a half an hour (she's missed 2 weeks in a row now), washing and hanging out a few loads of laundry, helping Em finish her notes for her biography book report, taking Em to church choir practice and hopefully getting some paper organization things done.  What is this I hear about bon bon eating and stay at home parents?  I've never experienced that yet!  I hope everyone has a great day!

Wordless Wednesday #1 ~Spring Shoes

So I've been a bit busy lately.  Friday, March 16th on the way home from picking up Em at school, my van's serpentine belt decided to SNAP!  I was a block away from the school, called my husband and he got out of work early to come check it out.  I drove home with my girls while he tried to pull part of the belt out.  There was enough belt left for him to make it home.  He made an appointment for my van Saturday morning and had a co-worker follow him to the mechanic's....my van barely made it there.

Saturday was spent spring cleaning the sheds in our backyard (one stores the kids stuff, the other is for lawn and gardening items).  Lots of back bending work and moving things.  I. was. beat.  We picked the van up  late Saturday afternoon and the bill came to $627.00 (and that was with a coupon!).  The belt was replaced along with all the hoses to the power steering, which meant they had to drain the system.  My husband had been meaning to make an appointment for the hoses and power steering and a filter (plus he had purchased all those parts already), so he had them do that work as well.  Next month the van goes in for inspection so I hope after that there won;t be any more issues with it.

I spent Sunday trying to get a game to work on Em's laptop and cleaning my desk area in our basement.  What. a. mess.

The weather has been extremely nice here and we are taking advantage of it by spending time outdoors after school each day.  However, I had to get food shopping in today and began buying items for Easter baskets.  Glad to have that started because I know it will creep up on me.
I haven't had a lot of time online lately and I am missing it a bit.  Hopefully I can get back into a groove where I will have more time for some 'meaningful' posts around here.

This is a very powerful book about a woman who gets deployed, but also about a marriage that is on shaky ground.  Add to that a preteen daughter and a Kindergarten-aged daughter and you have a lot of other situations in this brilliant novel.  This is a story that is very true-to-life and will make you think about all the men and women who serve in the United States forces.  I was so touched by this novel that I could not go onto my next read for over a week.  The story resonated with me and will do the same with you!  This is a definite must read!

The good news for today is that Kaye's bone did not pop out of place again and she got a purple w/red glittered cast today (two more x-rays).  She will have it on for four weeks and we'll hope that the nerve that runs down her arm to her fingers heals so she can move her fingers normally again.  I love the new hospital that is only five minutes from our house. Great doctors and staff there as well.    The woman that checked us out was a woman that used to be a billing clerk at my allergists office!  I recognized her right away when we checked in for the appointment, but I could not place where I knew her from until she told me!  Aye, aye aye!

Yesterday the pediatrician called with Em's blood work results and yes, she indeed is still allergic to tree nuts (almonds, pecans, peanuts---pecans being the worst).  Coconut (only a level 1) and sesame seeds also came back as an allergy for her, but she's had both and never had a reaction.  The results also showed a Vitamin D3 deficiency, so she'll have to take 5000 IU's of that daily.  That really baffles me, but it is what it is.  Last, but certainly not least, her cholesterol levels came back high.  I never would've thought this, but this is the new reasoning behind blood work for children between the ages of 9-12 according to this article: (http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/should-kids-have-their-cholesterol-checked-201112224020).  There will have to be more diet modifications around here and I am thinking of giving her a fish oil pill every day.  She hates fish, so this is a good addition for her.  Looking at her you'd never think anything is wrong, but I am glad she had the bloodwork done for peace of mind.

So four more weeks of a broken arm in a cast and also new diet modifications to reduce high cholesterol levels.  I guess I have some recipe and meal searching to do!

I've Got Your NumberI've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This started out kind of 'flaky' to me.  I put it down for about a week and then when I picked it up again it started to get much better~ I could not put it down! LOL!

Poppy loses her phone and her engagement ring during a hotel fire drill.  She finds a cell in the trash and figures she'll use that until she finds hers.  The cell belongs to a businessman's assistant and he agrees for her to use the phone for a short time.  This scenario sets this book up for a lot of fun and mischief.

One aspect of the book I did not enjoy is Magnus and his family.  Poppy is engaged to Magnus and I just could not like this man or his family no matter how much I tried.

Just like the 'Shopaholic' series, this is a true chick lit book with some 'airiness' to the main character.   It's a fun read and I can totally see this as a Lifetime movie ;-)

Happy Birthday Girl Scouting!

This evening my daughter Em's Brownie troop will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts.  They will have a birthday party in celebration of the 100 years of this organization's great existence.  Ms. Juliette Gordon Low was the founder of Girl Scouts.
You can watch this three part video on YouTube
to learn more about this extraordinary woman:

Em's troop will also have a visit from Juliette herself! ( a local woman who impersonates historical figures.)  Then, for 6 days, my daughter's Brownie troop will follow a Girl Scout Birthday Week Calendar and complete 6 activities in order to receive a Fun Patch.

I was  a Girl Scout in the 1980's from about 3rd grade through 8th grade.  Looking back I wish I would have stuck  with the scouts, but school work became my focus and I quit in the middle of 8th grade as a Cadette Girl Scout.  I still have my badges and my badge book from when I was a Junior Girl Scout.  Em loves to look at that stuff.  I am so happy she is enjoying scouting as much as I did.  I have fond memories of field trips, crafts, activities we did in order to earn badges, and of course camping!

This is also a great time to remember all the Girl Scout leaders, past and present, who volunteer(ed) their time to help mold young women all around the country.   There's a lot involved in planning meetings, trips and activities in order to earn all those patches.  Without the volunteers and parents that give of their time, this organization would not exist for all these young girls. And let's face it, more than ever kids need a positive place to experience friendship and fun in a safe environment!  If you have a daughter and would like to get her involved with scouting, or you'd like to volunteer to be a leader, please visit http://www.girlscouts.org/.  You do not need to have children to be a leader.  I have a friend who is not even married and does not have children and she has been a leader for high school age scouts for years.

If you were a Girl Scout, if your daughter is/was a Girl Scout, here are three simple ways to celebrate today:

(taken from Girl Scouts of The USA's Facebook page)

1.  Wear green or a piece of Girl Scout memorabilia today.
2. Post on your Facebook wall today about what Girl Scouting meant to you, in your own words.  Or tweet about the power of @GirlScouts, using #GirlScouts100 hashtag.
3.Smile and feel yummy-good all day today, knowing Juliette Gordon Low's vision--and our beloved institution---has endured for a century.

Well, no 'virtual me' post today.  So much for the relaxing evening I hoped for on Thursday night.  Kaye, my 5 year old daughter, fell off her bike Thursday evening and  dislocated her arm and broke it in two places.  We were at the E.R. from 7pm Thursday, until 2:30am Friday.  They sedated her twice using a drug called ketamine, which made her glassy-eyed and was very scary for me.  They used this sedative because they need to try to get her bone back in place.  They took soooooo many x-rays (about 16 at the E.R.).  We went to a hand specialist on Friday afternoon because the orthopedic doctor from the E.R. was concerned about the bone lining up properly, as well as the nerve that runs to the fingers; she wasn't having a lot of movement in her hand.  So Friday they did some more x-rays and the x-ray technician was very concerned about how much radiation she had been exposed to.  I was not happy to say the least and am also concerned about how many of these x-rays are actually going to be covered on my insurance.  They did not put a regular cast on her because they want to do another x-ray this Thursday at her visit and see what it reveals.  She is on Motrin and Tylenol with codeine which are taken alternately throughout the day.  Her pain definitely seems to have lessened, which makes me very happy.
I have had a very unrestful three days.  I did not sleep much Thursday night, caught up on some sleep Friday night, had to get up early Saturday morning to take Em for blood work that her pediatrician requested from her nine year well visit, and then last night, Saturday, Kaye feel asleep before dinner and then woke up around 11pm and would not go back to sleep.  I am so hoping for a near normal nights sleep tonight.
So, not the post I was hoping to share, but I wanted to let everyone know this is what has happened and that I hope I will be able to focus on some fun posts in the near future.  Thanks for your understanding!

It has been a warm March day here in Eastern PA. However, the winds have given me a terrible headache....almost like a sinus headache. I feel so sleepy too, so I think tonight after I watch the American Idol results, I will read for a bit and then hopefully get some extra Zzzzzz's.

Tomorrow is going to be a Full Circle day. I have to run to the store for some necessities, I'd like to buy some new cafe curtains for the kitchen (long overdue), and in the evening Em's elementary school is having Bingo Night. Em, Kaye and I are going and they have refreshments there, so Jay will just have to have dinner at home by himself (he wasn't interested in going to Bingo Night). Saturday morning Em and I have to go to have her blood work drawn that her pediatrician recommended. She has to fast for 12 hours (cholesterol blood test) and is anxious about the whole thing. I made the appointment for 8:45am so that she'll be able to eat a snack before bed and then after that all she can have is water. I didn't have my first blood test until I had to get life insurance with my husband, so I was probably 30 years old (and I wasn't excited about the fact of them drawing blood in my own home!) Apparently giving children ages 9-11 is something new and it all has to do with the rising obesity rates in children. My youngest sister sent me this link: Should kid shave their cholesterol checked?.

I am not overly excited that my nine year old has to get a blood test, but at least it will give us peace of mind. I think the blood panel is checking for glucose (diabetes does run on both sides of our family), cholesterol, the thyroid, and I had the pediatrician add the nut panel because she has been allergic to nuts when she had the skin prick test done four years ago at our allergists office, but the blood test will give a definitive answer. So after the blood test is done I will be able to relax a bit this weekend. And lose an hour of sleep :-/ Yes, it's time to

So, what did you all think about that? I've been wanting to try this 'virtual me' out since I found this site, Voki last week! I made the avatar last week and tried out the text to speech option using Kate from the US's voice, but it sounded like a robot droning on. I do not have a microphone built into my laptop, which is about three years old, so I used my nine year old daughter's laptop that she got for her birthday in December and transferred the sound file over to my laptop to upload. It sounds super simple, but I spent all morning trying to hook up an old computer microphone that my husband has on his desktop and it was all garbled when I tried to record. I gave up on that and then went in search of a headset that came with my very first desktop computer back in 1998 (Yikes!). This headset was for a program called ViaVoice and I never even used it. Of course now that I have a use for it, I cannot find it! I spent a good chunk of time searching for this thing with no luck. So, although I accomplished what I set out to do, it took WAY too long! Tuesdays are my no kids day (usually). My Mom watches my 5 year old for me, my 9 year old is in school, and I usually use this day to do shopping, catch up on a few TV shows on Tivo, do some cleaning around the house, or like today, spend 2 hours trying to get my voice recorded so my talking avatar will work on my blog! So, with all that said, I hope you enjoyed the 'Virtual Me'. She will return, I just don't know when. I think I may have to buy myself a headset so I can continue providing you little messages every time I post. For now, I must go start my chores for the day. I've spent enough wasteful time for one day!
